June being our CFC anniversary month, my thoughts go back to my own journey as a lay Catholic, and how grateful I am to the Lord for calling me and my spouse and our children, not only to an organization, but to a whole new way of life, for that is our hope and ideal. We are partners of the Church and are frontliners in the various initiatives to observe a Catholic and Christian way of life.We thus thank and honor, too, members of CFC and numerous other lay organizations as well, who even in their quiet ways, witness to God’s love in the very way they live their lives, amidst the many challengies and temptations of the world.
“Whoever is not against us is for us.” (Mk 9,40) Words of Christ in response to his disciples who said, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” If we have the spirit of Christ, as we should, then we would have the same reaction when we are faced with a similar situation, which is something common since we cannot deny that we will always have some differences and conflicts among ourselves, and will have to contend with the unavoidable diversity of cultures, beliefs, lifestyles, etc., among ourselves. Gal 6,2) It’s the charity that is willing to suffer for the others, and can consider as our real treasures here on earth the following conditions: hunger, thirst, heat, cold, pain, dishonor, poverty, loneliness, betrayal, slander, prison… It’s the charity that considers sacrifice as its way, that welcomes any cross that can come our way, that is detached from passing opinions and views, and willing to suffer for the truth, no matter how unfair that would be. Far from turning us off or distancing ourselves from the parties concerned when we experience these differences and conflicts, we should all the more be interested to be with them, to help and love them in whatever way we can, always with God’s grace.
It’s content sets into stone, at least in current government plans, causes of alarm that many communities and advocates had been concerned about during public presentations of the draft PEP: which is, that the Philippines intends to retain reliance, and even pursue expansion, of its fossil fuel use—coal and, increasingly, fossil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). What a beautiful idea it is to think of that, if we as a country can maximize our vast potential for renewables, the Philippines itself could be a hope spot for renewables for the rest of the world!In the next few weeks, civil society, communities, members of the Church, and even public servants will be unveiling a major initiative to advance the deployment of distributed renewable energy in the Philippines, especially solar power. This comes at a very timely moment, too, as we mark a year or so to go ahead the challenge, we set for ourselves to move away by 2025 from financial institutions and businesses that are using precious financial resources entrusted to us to support dirty fossil fuel energy and extractive activities.
