At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I would like to remind soc-med enthusiasts to please, please be aware of social media sharing—and consuming. Be particularly cautious when encountering such messages on platforms like Facebook, Twitter (now X), and WhatsApp. False information can easily go viral. When you indiscriminately forward unexamined material attributed to the pope, you allow yourself to become a soldier of the Prince of Lies. And you know what he wants—a Church divided, confused, crushed. If you are not getting any help in that department, use critical thinking and scepticism. See if the content of the message aligns with the pope’s known beliefs, values, public statements, and Church teachings. Be cautious of messages that seem sensational (“Pope Francis cancels the Holy Bible”), polarizing (“Pope Francis endorses Bernie Sanders for President”) or do not sync with the Magisterium teachings (as in the message referred to about using perfume and silverware, which was in reality an essay written and first posted by a female Brazilian singer, see?). The spread of misinformation, especially when attributed to influential figures like the Pope, can have significant or damaging consequences. Recall the viral prayer, complete with a video and various visuals, that the faithful spread around ad nauseam as coming from Pope Francis—“I am vaccinated by the Precious Blood of Christ. No virus can touch me.” In reality, there is no record whatsoever of the pope authoring that prayer, but it was blasted through social media. It even appeared in a billboard in the Philippines. Imagine the false sense of security it created in those who believed it, and the disappointment that followed when—vaccinated “by the blood of Christ”—they still got Covid again and again.
Regarding media technology, various popes have released several encyclicals, exhortations, and messages, acknowledging the enormous potential of mass and social media for the spread of the faith, while at the same time pointing out the potential harm they could do to human beings and society if they are used irresponsibly. Pope Francis expressed the same thought to participants of the “Minerva Dialogues” during an audience last 27 March 2023. But the risks that this can be used in a harmful way remain high, especially if we listen to experts such as Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist who was part of Google and considered the “Godfather of AI.” Hinton has retired from the giant tech company so that he could devote his time talking about “safety issues” and warns of the possible risks AI may pose to society if not used responsibly. In a short message explaining the theme for World Communications Day, the Vatican press office said thus: “Like all revolutions, this one based on artificial intelligence, too, poses new challenges to ensure that machines do not contribute to a large-scale system of disinformation and do not also increase the loneliness of those who are already alone, depriving us of the warmth that only communication between people can provide.

One of the most influential Asian voices in the ongoing Synod of Bishops pointed to “big differences” among delegates in many hot-button topics, which means decisions cannot be rushed.
Apart from legislation or class actions that would prohibit the use of these chemicals in food production, we can do the following: Remove as much of the lingering pesticides and herbicides in rice, food, and vegetables by washing copiously with clean water, preferably running water. The following are some of the phytonutrient-containing herbs, vegetables and fruits that support the detoxification system of the body: Green tea contains catechins Turmeric contains curcumin Soy contains genistein Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower contain glucosinolates Red grapes contain resveratrol Watercress and pomegranate contain ellagic acid These foods additionally provide a positive influence on the expression of genes that regulate the detoxification processes associated with toxic mineral accumulation. We can help mitigate this dangerous trend toward further environmental destruction and its effects on our bodies by such simple steps as being aware of what are harmful and by refusing to ingest what we know will wreak havoc on our bodily systems.
Consequently, whatever is being done risks being seen only as a ploy to distract attention.” Indeed, in our very own country, present and potential progress in tapping clean and affordable energy from renewables is muted by ambitious plans to expand the use of fossil gas, retain coal, and allow the entry of other unreliable and risky technologies. “We must move beyond the mentality of appearing to be concerned but not having the courage needed to produce substantial changes” he says, and put on a brave heart, “…for authentic faith not only gives strength to the human heart, but also transforms life, transfigures our goals and sheds light on our relationship to others and with creation as a whole.” We are asked to remember that “the universe unfolds in God, who fills it completely… there is a mystical meaning to be found in a leaf, in a mountain trail, in a dewdrop, in a poor person’s face.” We live in a world that was so lovingly created, and if “the world sings of an infinite Love: how can we fail to care for it?” It must be pointed out that Pope Francis also issues the most important challenge of not stopping at generating action within the individual level. As he says in a manner that could not be clearer, “the most effective solutions will not come from individual efforts alone, but above all from major political decisions on the national and international level.” One could think of the lesson taught by our Lord Jesus when he, too, walked this Earth in a parable from the gospel of Luke—”From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Brothers and sisters, God has indeed granted those that are in government and in the highest places of society the means and capacity to make sweeping changes happen – changes that can be enough to pull the brakes on an even more catastrophic future.
